Each step of the anodizing process develops the microstructural features of the aluminum
alloy surface and near surface to a depth of approximately 50% the total anodic oxide
thickness, making the metallurgy of the surface key to the function and appearance of the
anodized finish. The purpose of this webinar is to present how a microstructure develops
according to the four metallurgical impact factors: chemistry, composition, deformation and
heat treatment, which enables the ability to develop a virtual picture of the surface from the
alloy designation, manufacturing process and heat treatment condition. Such understanding
aids in alloy selection for design and application, as well as trouble shooting and failure
analysis of anodized aluminum alloy components.
