Anodizing Essentials Workshop
Instructors: Various AAC Member Experts
Monday, May 14, 2018
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $400 (AAC members*); $800 (nonmembers)

Anodizing Essentials is part of the “school for anodizers” that teaches more than the fundamentals. Experienced industry practitioners and trouble-shooters provide details on the foundation of quality anodizing. This workshop is designed to increase the knowledge and ability of anyone involved in operating an anodizing line.

Anodizing Essentials is the answer to those who seek a basic program in how to anodize aluminum … and how to do it properly. This one-day program for anodizers teaches the fundamentals and the foundation of quality anodizing. This basic course explains how to anodize aluminum properly and was developed by anodizing professionals for anodizing professionals. Leading anodizing professionals will present what they know best—anodizing—with a focus on achieving a quality anodized product. A question and answer session at the end of the course will help attendees further understand the concepts presented.

With an emphasis on quality, the program takes the learner through the entire process – beginning with the metallurgical properties of aluminum alloys commonly anodized right through to the final rinse and sealing processes. This course is ideal for those who may be new to working the anodizing line, as well as those who oversee the process or who may simply want a refresher – a reminder of best practices.

*AAC members: be sure to log in as a member before registering for the Workshop to obtain the member rate!

The Program

The Anodizing Essentials program will address technology fundamentals and troubleshooting techniques to provide anodizing line workers with practical knowledge needed to improve operations.

Anodizing Overview & Anodizing Video
This session will focus specifically on the Anodizing Step prior to expanding into a step-by-step breakdown of the total anodizing process.

Metallurgy Basics for Aluminum Surfaces
An overview of Aluminum Metallurgy and the impact the alloy composition and microstructure have on the surface will be presented.

The effects of masking and racking practices on the anodizing process and resultant end product will be discussed.

Cleaning & Rinsing
The technology and problem solving behind cleaning and rinsing processes will be covered.

Etch & Desmut
The technology and problem solving behind etching and deoxidation processes will be covered.

Bright Dipping
The technology and problem-solving techniques for bright dip processes will be discussed.

Anodizing Basics for Aluminum Surfaces
The aluminum alloy designation system is presented, along with an overview of metallurgical structure and properties as they influence the formation and appearance of the anodic oxide layer. Practical aspects facing the anodizer are highlighted and explained, with an aim toward delivering a quality finish.

Power – Rectifiers & Transformers for the Aluminum Surface Treatment Industry
The roles and functions of rectifiers and transformers, along with their effects on the anodizing process, will be explained.

Dyeing & Electrolytic Coloring
Architectural and decorative coloring techniques will be covered, along with a brief introduction to interference and decomposition technologies.  Problem-solving and troubleshooting will be addressed.

Sealing the Anodic Oxide
The fundamentals of the sealing process will be discussed, including how to choose the best seal for various end uses.

Safety / Waste Treatment
Safety in the anodize area will be briefly discussed.  Included will be a discussion about chemical handling and general safety in the Anodize area and on the line.

Waste treatment will cover the basics of removing metals from the Anodize waste stream.  This will include water conservation and line management as it applies to waste treatment.  The importance of accurate reporting and what is required of the Anodizer will also be discussed.

EDU '18 and the Anodizing Essentials Workshop will take place at the Chicago Marriott O'Hare Hotel in Chicago, Illinois near O'Hare International Airport.
